MIRANDA JAMISON Lead Reporter Editor’s Note: This is the first of a two-part feature story on United Cerebral Palsy President and CEO Armando Contreras, whose life was shaped by disability from birth and who now leads one of the nation’s most influential disability service organizations. Part one explores his personal story, the challenges faced in taking over an organization on the brink of bankruptcy and how UCP’s work in Missouri reflects its mission of creating “a life without limits.” Part two will highlight Missouri’s growing programs, early intervention efforts and Contreras’ vision for the future of disability support nationwide.

New ag teacher sets sights on student growth, FFA expansion

MIRANDA JAMISON When Richmond High School students return this fall, they will be greeted by a new face in the agriculture department – one with a long history of hands-on teaching and a vision for growing the program. Erik Harel studied horticulture and turf grass management at the University of Rhode Island before starting his own landscaping business, which he ran for five years.

Resident warns of flooding risk, council tackles city issues

A Richmond homeowner, worried that nearby construction could make long-standing drainage problems worse, asked city officials to address the situation before his property is damaged. During a recent Richmond City Council meeting, resident Billy Hufford said he supports new housing but fears recent work across the street from his home at 207 Morningside Terrace will cause more runoff toward his split-level house.
