CARROLLTON – Orrick varsity track coach Kirk Thacker was pleased to see his boys team holds its own against another Ray County school at the Bruce Finlayson Invitational. Sparked by runner-up finishes in five events, the Bearcats placed second in the team standings at the April 19 competition at Carrollton with 91 points – one point behind Richmond, Thacker’s high school alma mater. “(It) all came down to the last race (1,600-meter relay) and they finished ahead of us and got the points,” Thacker stated via text message. “So proud of our efforts and we can now see what we need to work on. Great meet because of all of the talent we ran against. Just made us better.” Some of that talent represented larger schools. Richmond, for example, is in Class 3 in track and field. Other schools included Lexington, also a Class 3 program; and Lafayette County of Higginsville, a Class 2 program. Orrick is in Class 1.
