RICHMOND – Less than halfway through the program, more than 120 people had already joined what is expected to be recalled as the first annual International Day for People with Disabilities Dec. 3 at the Richmond High School track.

JEFFERSON CITY – The COVID-19 pandemic caused nursing homes to change policies overnight, with telehealth adopted widely in an effort to reduce stress on the health care system. Telehealth did so by keeping residents safe and avoiding unnecessary transfers to already-overwhelmed hospitals, based of University of Missouri information.

PLEASANT VALLEY – Sheriff Will Akin opened the Community Drug Education Summit with the reason for calling together law enforcers, mental health specialists and the public: “We are investigating an unprecedented number of cases involving deaths due to drug overdoses. We’re talking about teens and young adults here.” A DRUG HUB Poorly made, deadly drugs – primarily fentanyl, a synthetic opioid – flow into Ray, Clay and Jackson counties.

RICHMOND – Ongoing maintenance problems at the Ray County Jail continue going on. Problems include water coming up through the poorly constructed jail floor, water dripping down through the ceiling’s electric light fixtures, poor video monitoring, sheet-metal walls that can be torn into strips to use as knives, an unreliable heating and air conditioning system, poor ventilation and too little re quired access to natural light.

RICHMOND – Hundreds of people lined downtown’s streets for the Shirkey Golf Course Christmas Parade. The parade organizer and Shirkey general manager, Ken Lacy, said the golf course took over the parade last Christmas season, when those who normally organize the parade did not because of COVID-19 concerns.

RICHMOND – For about three weeks, Richmond High School worked on a general aid fund to help community families struggling during the holiday season with anything from the lights being turned off to other financial hardships, Student Council sponsor Michaela Lamb reported.
