THE WAIT IS OVER Richmond has its second top-four team finish at state in boys track. Tallying 40 points, the Spartans placed second at this year’s Class 3 state competition, held May 22-23 in Jefferson City.

I’m torn again as a football fan. As you might recall, a few months ago, I pledged indifference toward the Kansas City Chiefs, a team I had loved for much of my life.

Richmond varsity coach Nick Persell had a new volunteer helping him run this year’s version of the Future Spartan Youth Football Camp – a former pro player and current minister.

CLOSE Richmond junior Isaac Kaylor nearly broke the top 50 at the Class 3 state boys golf tournament. Shooting a 162 overall, Kaylor finished in a four-way tie for 52nd at the two-day competition, held Monday and Tuesday at the Sedalia Country Club.

Monday wasn’t Richmond’s day in varsity baseball, Spartans coach Zach Mc-Gill said.

A Richmond alumna provided the final run of Rockhurst University’s softball season.

DISTRICT CHAMPIONS Orrick can add another district title to its boys track and field banner. The Bearcats won the boys portion of the Class 1 District 4 meet, held May 9 at Carrollton, with 85 points – their fourth straight district title.

Nolan Quick got his wish. Quick, who graduated high school last week from Richmond, was seeking to continue his basketball career at a school near his hometown.

For the first time in more than 20 years, Richmond is sending a boys high school golf team to state competition. The Spartans, who’ve produced individual qualifiers during those 20-plus years, are set to compete in the Class 3 state tournament, slated for May 18-19 at the Sedalia Country Club.

CHILLICOTHE – The day after graduating from Richmond High School, Cyrus Jackson celebrated by helping his alma mater qualify for sectional track and field competition in two relay races. He also helped set two school records.
