Couple remembers family service on Veterans Day

Body
On this Veterans Day, Nov. 11, we extend our appreciation and thoughts to our active-duty military personnel, and we pay tribute to the many millions of veterans who have served our country over the past 246 years. We also wish to memorialize the passing this year of our brother-in-law, Cmdr. Barry Rowe, and acknowledge the other veterans of the Jones and Moskowitz families who served during major wars from the Civil War to the War on Terror.

Domestic abuse needs Ray County’s attention

Body
The stories told by women who have experienced domestic violence – whether financial, verbal, physical or all of the above – will break the heart of anyone with even a small degree of empathy. Financial abuse occurs when one “partner” in a relationship, regardless of gender, takes control of all income and spending, with the other partner given no say.

School district no place for bullying, racism

Body
This is a taunt one little white kid is unlikely to hurl at another little white kid: “Why don’t you go eat a dog?” Being taunted in that way would likely cause a white child to frown for a moment, then smile quizzically, and ask, “What’s that even mean?” But if a white child launched the same taunt at a child with an Asia background, then there should be no doubt of the intent. The taunt suggests at least some aspects of Asia’s many cultures are different and inferior, to “white culture,” whatever white culture is, considering how many differences are found among whites with ancestors from eastern, western, northern and southern Europe; who have mixed-race blood, often without knowing that fact; and who even within various regions of the United States hold vastly different beliefs, as proven by thinking evident before, during and after the last, presidential election.
