Richmond varsity coach Nick Persell and his Spartans won’t need to board a bus for a while this 11-man football season. The Spartans will open Friday by hosting Harrisonville – their first opener at Spartan Stadium since 2020.
Some area sports fans might recognize Richmond’s new varsity tennis coach more from his work on the basketball court than the tennis court. Former Hardin-Central boys and girls varsity basketball coach Brent Behler succeeds Brett Terry in leading the Richmond netters.
Some summer-league volleyball was what Richmond needed to be prepared for the fall varsity season, according to second-year coach Cody Hogan. Playing in a league in Lathrop, the Spartans faced “some really good teams up there,” Hogan recalled Aug.
For the first time in 16 years, Murray Dennis isn’t coaching Richmond High School golf. Courtney Sisson is one of the successors to Dennis, who retired in May after the boys season.
For his second season as Richmond varsity softball coach, Trent Thompson wants his Spartans to keep improving from 2023, when they went 2-15. “I want to continue to try to be competitive … and build on from last year,” Thompson said Aug.
Richmond senior Isabelle Dooley is thrilled to be running cross country again. Dooley, who has competed in the sport since middle school, was sidelined her junior year because of hip surgeries, she explained Aug.
Norborne Hardin-Central (NHC) running back/linebacker Kalel Bowman is an athlete of few words. Or at least he is where NHC’s regularseason opener in varsity 8-man football is concerned.
Hardin-Central’s cross country program is an all-girls club this season – at least at the high school level. Jenni Scott, now in her third season of coaching the Bulldogs, is working with two varsity runners: Emily Barrett, a senior; and Valerie Gabel, a sophomore.
