COVID didn’t get in Matt Habermehl’s way this year. Habermehl, who’s in his third year as activities director for the Richmond R-XVI School District, had wanted to stage an orientation event the past two years to kick off fall sports, he said.

Richmond Middle School coaches Tatha Farnan, Shawn Calhoun and Brett Terry had a hit with their inaugural youth basketball camp – and one camp activity in particular – based on what they witnessed Monday at the middle school.

Varsity coach Crystal Turner’s staff looked different when Richmond kicked off its second week of volleyball camp Monday at the high school. Helping Turner drill the Spartans on the various facets of the game was Georgiana Turner, her mother.

Monday’s weather didn’t force Norborne Hardin-Central (NHC) varsity coach Andrew Watson and his Aggies to change their plans as they started their latest 8-man football camp this week. With the rain falling, the Aggies trained that morning outside on one of the practice fields at Hardin-Central.

Kelly Jaggars and Natalie Marrant have their expectations set for Richmond’s varsity volleyball season – and they expect this week’s team camp sessions to help the Spartans meet those goals. “I really hope to get something on that banner,” Marrant said, referring to the banner for Missouri River Valley Conference East Division and postseason titles in volleyball that hangs in the Richmond High School gym, where camp started with a morning session Monday.

Archery is a sibling activity in the Logsdon clan. Blake Logsdon, who graduated this spring from Richmond High School, participates in the sport.

For Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell and his staff, a focal point for this week’s team camp at the high school is to teach, or reteach, their Spartans how to do something they’ll do regularly starting the second week of August: practice.

On Monday morning, something was clear to Hardin-Central varsity softball coach Brandee Doyle as her Bulldogs started their latest offseason team camp at the Hardin American Legion and Auxiliary baseball and softball fields.

Even after a packed schedule last week, Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump could still see some get-up-and-go in her Spartans on June 30, when they hosted Braymer in offseason scrimmaging.
