After Indy, Platte City, Hawkins punches ticket for Columbia

PLATTE CITY – Drew Hawkins is racking up the highway miles. First, the Hardin-Central junior visited Indiana for the 95th National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention & Expo, as the Richmond News reported Oct. 28. Then, he ran at the Class 1 District 4 boys cross country competition Oct. 29 at Platte Ridge Park. And because of his 24th-place finish in 20 minutes, 31.74 seconds, Hawkins is traveling again – this time, to Columbia, where he’ll run at Class 1 state competition. The boys’ race is slated to begin at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course. “Super-excited for him,” Hardin-Central cross country coach Jenni Scott said minutes after Hawkins’ district race. “This is a difficult course. Very difficult.” And as Scott mentioned, Hawkins had to negotiate the 3.1-mile course after an unorthodox training week because of his FFA road trip.
