Three Richmond youth-league teams keep title hopes alive
The high school varsity football program isn’t the only one in Richmond that is nicknamed the Spartans and in a championship hunt.
On Saturday, three Richmond teams in the West Central Football League will play for a league title (also called the Super Bowl) in Odessa – one consisting of third-graders, one comprising fourthgraders and one consisting of sixth-graders. Two of the teams secured their spots with playoff semifinal wins Oct. 22 at Richmond Dear Elementary Field.
The fourth-graders reached the championship game with a 25-0 victory over Odessa. They’re slated to play Pleasant Hill at 9 a.m. Saturday at Odessa for their age-group title.
The third-graders punched their tickets to play Odessa at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, also in Odessa, by rallying for a 7-6 double-overtime win over Clinton, also Oct. 22 at Dear Elementary, capped by Emerson Borden’s extra-point kick.
