CARROLLTON – When Richmond sprinter Genevieve Didier received the baton for the final leg of the girls 1,600-meter relay at the Bruce Finlayson Invitational, she and her fellow Spartans were in a close race with Lafayette County of Higginsville.
When she finished her leg, they weren’t.
Didier quickly bolted away and helped Richmond win the final event of the April 21 varsity track and field meet at Carrollton in 4 minutes, 30.13 seconds.
“Higginsville was closing in at the last 100, so I was, like, ‘Oh, it’s not going to be … (an) easy race. I (have) really got to push it,’” said Didier, a first-year high schooler. “And then, I did. … As a team, we … all did that and came out (with) first place.”
The win completed a Richmond sweep of the girls relays. The Spartans claimed the 400 relay in 53.52 and the 800 relay in 1:55.17.
Like other events that day, a stout, cool wind made winning the 400 relay challenging at times. In running the leadoff leg, “the wind was kind of hard at…
