Plucky poultry judge combs through county’s best birds

RICHMOND – Roosters crow loudly, seemingly already in competition, unaware crowing is not a criterion as Jasmine Gates, this year’s Ray County Fair poultry judge, arrives. Hailing from Cairo, Missouri, Gates removes from their pens various chickens, bantams and full-sized roosters while running her fingers over their feathers and testing their weight, and examining their body structure – combs, beaks, breasts, wings, legs and feet.

Commission seeks funds to address Henrietta Bridge

RICHMOND – Henrietta area leaders discussed repairing the old Missouri Highway 13 bridge or installing a crossing with the Ray County Commission on July 26. “We’re looking for money, just like everything else is needing the money, and they all want the big money, but what we’re trying to determine is whether or not to take that bridge down,” Presiding Commissioner Bob King said afterward.

Billy goats ruff on aching ogre at library-backed puppet show

RICHMOND – From the poor ogre’s point of view, puppet show guests heard “The Ogre’s Tail,” a retelling of the story of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” July 31 at Maurice Roberts Park. At the invitation of the Ray County Public Library, Stone Lion Puppet Theatre’s Taylor Gass presented the show.
