RICHMOND – The Richmond Rotary Club and the city united to plant 19 trees July 19 at the Pavilion Square. The Pavilion Square is a developing park in downtown Richmond on the formerly vacant lot at the corner of East North Main and North Thornton streets.

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri is set for redistricting – lines being redrawn for U.S. House and Missouri House and Senate seats.

RICHMOND – Roosters crow loudly, seemingly already in competition, unaware crowing is not a criterion as Jasmine Gates, this year’s Ray County Fair poultry judge, arrives. Hailing from Cairo, Missouri, Gates removes from their pens various chickens, bantams and full-sized roosters while running her fingers over their feathers and testing their weight, and examining their body structure – combs, beaks, breasts, wings, legs and feet.

ORRICK – To celebrate Independence Day and to express gratitude to veterans, representatives from the Orrick Christian Church dropped by the Veterans Community Project Outreach Center in Kansas City to deliver more than 150 items and more than $1,600 in donations.

RICHMOND – Senior Center Director Pat Mills said she does not know when the center will be ready physically to reopen and, when ready, when people can enter. Reopening depends on the completion of renovations, and entry depends on the COVID-19 Delta variant.

RICHMOND – Sheriff Scott Childers and Ray County commissioners agree at least some inmates must be housed elsewhere while the county grapples with structural deficiencies and potential health issues at the Ray County Jail.

RICHMOND – Ray County Commissioner/Richmond City Councilman Dave Powell resigned his council seat Tuesday. Powell said he received legal assurance he could hold both seats, but would have to recuse himself on issues regarding the city and county to avoid conflicts of interest.

RICHMOND – Henrietta area leaders discussed repairing the old Missouri Highway 13 bridge or installing a crossing with the Ray County Commission on July 26. “We’re looking for money, just like everything else is needing the money, and they all want the big money, but what we’re trying to determine is whether or not to take that bridge down,” Presiding Commissioner Bob King said afterward.

RICHMOND – From the poor ogre’s point of view, puppet show guests heard “The Ogre’s Tail,” a retelling of the story of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” July 31 at Maurice Roberts Park. At the invitation of the Ray County Public Library, Stone Lion Puppet Theatre’s Taylor Gass presented the show.
