At least some voters might be happy the Ray County Jail sales tax failed, but whether they made the right call by voting no looks doubtful. Sheriff Scott Childers blitzed the public, calling for what amounted to immediate public support for a half-cent sales tax to build a roughly $11 million, 80-bed jail to replace the shed-like building in Henrietta.

There will be a new Ray County Jail. The only question is whether to build it now by voting yes Tuesday or to kick it down the road, selfishly leaving others to do later what should be done now.
