At least some voters might be happy the Ray County Jail sales tax failed, but whether they made the right call by voting no looks doubtful. Sheriff Scott Childers blitzed the public, calling for what amounted to immediate public support for a half-cent sales tax to build a roughly $11 million, 80-bed jail to replace the shed-like building in Henrietta. As the new sheriff, he recognized serious structural defects. He took note of health, safety and morale failures because of the shoddy construction. Experts agreed the jail is not up to code; and the building’s many shortcomings leave the county vulnerable to possibly high-dollar lawsuits, something other Missouri counties have experienced to their financial detriment. But Childers called for aid too quickly. He charged like a bull, head down, ready to do the right thing, but he did not do so in the politically correct way.
