According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), there are an average of 132 suicide deaths per day and an estimated 1.70 million suicide attempts in 2021. Each year during September, we join with others across the country to help bring awareness to suicide and encourage education in hopes of preventing suicide. Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month is a chance to take time to stop and assess yourself and those around you to ensure those who need help have access to it, but what do you do if someone you love may be having thoughts of suicide? Although Ray County Commissioners were advised against the purchase of new property — for supposed placement of a mental health facility and jail — by Ray County Prosecuting Attorney Camille Johnston, other county officials and many residents, the group chose to table the topic rather than doing away with the idea. Water district staffer Jim Richey, Tri-County Mental Health CEO Tom Petrizzo and attendees that were content with their choice on the “land for the mental health and jail” topic and yet, chose to table the topic rather than doing away with the matter.
