RICHMOND – “The name’s Duckerton, Mighty Sparky Duckerton,” the duck tells me as I sit down for an exclusive interview beside a sleeping teddy bear on the comfy couch in Kerra Bowers’ summer school class at Sunrise Elementary School.

KANSAS CITY – When Ray County’s mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle lumbers into a suburban cul-de-sac in Clay County, there is good reason to expect bad news. Indeed, a big load smashed down on the heads of a Kansas City motorcycle gang, the Flying Bandits.

RICHMOND – Having closed more than a year ago to public use because of COVID-19, the Ray County Senior Center has remained closed beyond the expected July 1 reopening date. Significant but incomplete facility improvement efforts led to the delay, based on information from the Ray County Commission.

Arizona extradicts Missouri homicide suspect unopposed

RICHMOND – Cursory evidence suggested Richard Anthony Arrington, 31, Kansas City, would face at least a homicide charge after his arrest in Ray County following a multi-jurisdictional chase, but that did not happen.

COVID-19 CONTINUES KILL SPREE

RICHMOND – Ray County appeared to have overcome COVID-19, with the death toll frozen at 26 from April 11 to June 10, but that is over. The Ray County Health Department reported July 1 the death toll had hit 28, then 29 on July 8 and, as of July 15, 31.

Eagle versus turkey?

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The appearance of an American bald eagle and a turkey in the same Ray County field near the intersection of Route C and Missouri Highway 10 might remind some people of a popular American myth.

ON MISSOURI HIGHWAY 10 near Route C, between Richmond and Excelsior Springs, a bald eagle rests on a round hay bale. In the distance directly behind the eagle stands a wild turkey. Most citizens, surrounded by trappings of their modern nation adored their new messiah in a way they had never felt about Jesus. By the thousands and tens of thousands, they attended mass political rallies to hear him speak, cheering him as he left his plane, train or motorcade.

SOVIET SOLDIERS liberate the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz in January 1945, a few months before World War II ends. Over the camp gates are the words, “Arbeit Macht Frei,” meaning “Work Sets You Free.” The meaning is ironic and cruel, because being worked to death is the only way thousands of camp prisoners became free. An exhibition at Union Station covers the story of Auschwitz.

COVID THREATENS RESURGENCE

HIGGINSVILLE – More needs to be done – perhaps a monetary incentive – to curb the spread of COVID-19, U.S. Rep.

AFTER MONTHS spent wearing masks, limiting social contact and getting shots, instead of being rewarded with the freedom to once again mix and mingle socially, area residents are threatened by a new COVID-19 variant, known as Delta. The variant spreads faster and is deadlier than the original, with younger people becoming ill. The spread is aided by people who have refused to become immunized, and those people also are the most likely to contract and die from the virus, based on medical reports.
