RICHMOND – “The name’s Duckerton, Mighty Sparky Duckerton,” the duck tells me as I sit down for an exclusive interview beside a sleeping teddy bear on the comfy couch in Kerra Bowers’ summer school class at Sunrise Elementary School. “I heard what you said to the kids earlier, about not liking duck as food,” Duckerton whispers to me. “Just so you know, I don’t like people as food, either.” The remark leaves me tongue-tied for a moment. Duckerton has a distinctly duck accent, though not as thick as the accents that made her cousins, Daffy and Donald, international Hollywood celebrities. She also talks in a constant whisper, and I ask why. Before answering, Duckerton looks left and right at the students.
