CARROLLTON – History and myth suggest Menelaus, king of the Spartans, joined about two dozen other Greeks – enough for a small football team – who hid in a hollow horse to sneak through city gates to defeat the Trojans.
RICHMOND – The Spartans again validated varsity softball coach Staci Maddux’s faith in them to score runs Monday. Trailing 1-0, Richmond staged a three-run, fifth-inning rally and held on to defeat Cameron 3-1 at Southview Park.
NORBORNE – Coach Andrew Watson found a way to motivate his Aggies during halftime of Norborne Hardin-Central’s Oct. 1 meeting with Northland Christian.
ORRICK – Friday’s meeting with visiting Norborne Hardin-Central in varsity 8-man football will be difficult emotionally for Orrick coach Kirk Thacker, he acknowledged. A former Hardin-Central teacher and coach, Thacker helmed the NHC co-op program from inception in 2015 through the 2020 season.
ORRICK –The 4-1 Bulldogs face a Missouri Highway 10 and Ray County rival, visiting Norborne Hardin-Central, following Orrick’s 56-8 Oct. 1 road loss to undefeated Worth County/Northeast Nodaway.
RICHMOND – Varsity football coach Nick Persell wanted his Spartans to learn one big lesson from their 35-26 Sept. 24 homecoming loss to Lafayette County of Higginsville.
I look forward to visiting Higginsville again. Some area sports fans might question my sanity for making such statement, given a slate of recent events involving area teams that have played Lafayette County of Higginsville.
