KNOCKING OFF THE RUST
Richmond’s wrestlers “had some rust to knock off” after their holiday break, according to coach Cody Hogan.
The Spartans knocked off enough rust to win the boys title Jan. 6 in a tournament at Marshall, tallying 216.5 points – 44.5 points ahead of runner-up Brookfield.
“We had a goal of winning it and getting all 14 in the top four,” Hogan stated Monday via email. “We were short of the top four by three kids.”
Of Richmond’s 11 top-four finishers, four won their respective weight classes: Daxton McGinnis, 113 pounds; Cayden Morris, 126; Elijah Sanders, 165; and Tucker Adams, 215.
Sanders stayed undefeated in winning his title. The senior capped his run with an 11-2 major decision over Brookfield’s Colton Parn. He also received the Most Outstanding Wrestler award, according to Hogan.
“Elijah wrestled well,” Hogan stated. “He continued to wrestle strong and aggressive. The Brookfield kid he had in the finals is a kid he has had close matches with in the past.”…
