Orrick softball coach Chase Sims saw perhaps the best hit from the Bearcats this varsity season during their 20-0 loss in three innings April 5 to visiting Sweet Springs. Leadoff batter Natasha Hicks provided the hit.

Richmond varsity baseball coach Zach McGill saw his Spartans’ 15-0 loss in three innings to Benton of St. Joseph April 4 at Southview Park as a reminder of the importance of mental toughness.

Kail Farnan is representing Richmond on the links in his final season of high school sports. He’s also representing the Spartans on the baseball diamond.

Richmond has returned to competition mode in high school track. After having no meets scheduled last week, the Spartans ran, jumped, vaulted and threw against other schools Wednesday at the Rob Hoefer Husker Invitational, staged by Lafayette County of Higginsville at Higginsville.

Murray Dennis finds himself in new territory in his final season of coaching Richmond prep golf, which began last week with a tournament and a triangular. Dennis, who’ll retire in a few months, has three siblings in the last Richmond program he’ll lead – Kail, Bryer and Brody Farnan.

Last week provided a few measuring sticks for Richmond track coach David Rash and his staff. The week was the season opener for the Spartans, who participated in two meets: the UCM High School Mule Relays, a March 18 indoor-outdoor meet at Warrensburg; and the Richmond Invitational, held March 21.

Orrick varsity track coach Kirk Thacker and his boys team are pursuing another district title this season. But before they attempt to win their second straight Class 1 District 7 crown, they have another goal they want to accomplish: win the I-70 Conference title.

A new era is underway with Richmond in varsity baseball. The Spartans kicked off their season last weekend in tournament play at Odessa, going 1-2.
