Watching Chiefs in Super Bowl LV stirs memories best forgotten

Watching Super Bowl LV brought back some bad memories. Or rather, it brought back memories of watching bad Super Bowls. Bad as in lopsided. Watching Tampa Bay hammer my beloved Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 Sunday night called to mind some Super Bowl blowouts of the 1980s and ’90s – an era that, if memory serves, prompted wisecracks in the media about the commercials being more entertaining than the games they sponsored. The only difference was, I enjoyed watching some of those blowouts, like, say, Super Bowls XX, XXII and XXIV. At the time, Super Bowl XX was aweinspiring, what with the way Chicago’s brutal defense pummeled New England, ending in a 46-10 steamrolling of the Patriots by the Bears (pronounced as “da Bears” by certain characters on a certain show called “Saturday Night Live”). The way the Bears had played that season, it seemed inevitable they would easily win. Watching the rout unfold, it felt like I was watching a team fulfill its destiny.
