Spartans’ mental toughness tested in loss to Cardinals

Richmond varsity baseball coach Zach McGill saw his Spartans’ 15-0 loss in three innings to Benton of St. Joseph April 4 at Southview Park as a reminder of the importance of mental toughness. “Any time you fail more than you succeed, it’s going to be tough, mentally,” McGill said. “And that happens in baseball.” McGill also suggested the loss to the state-ranked Cardinals is part of the growing pains the Spartans are experiencing this season. “We’re young,” he said. “We’re working through bad habits. That’s a process. … That’s not going to happen overnight. Baseball is a rep sport. The more you play, the more you work on things, (the) better you’re going to get.” The Spartans will “get better from this as we go on,” McGill assured.
