Spartans, with mended QB, fall to Huskers
HIGGINSVILLE – Richmond varsity coach Nick Persell and senior quarterback Donivin Williams agreed after Richmond’s 18-12 Sept. 23 road loss to undefeated Lafayette County of Higginsville that an incomplete pass by Williams on fourth-and-13 with about 90 seconds left didn’t cost the Spartans the football game.
But their observations differed on how the Spartans could’ve taken care of business so they wouldn’t have needed to attempt a fourth-down pass late in the fourth quarter.
The outcome might’ve been different had the Spartans been able to craft “a real game plan with Donivin at quarterback,” Persell suggested. It was uncertain to him and his staff when Williams, who had sat out two games with a shoulder injury, would be cleared to play, he explained.
“We got him back on Thursday (Sept. 22) and we still weren’t sure,” Persell said. “So … (on) Friday, the trainer … made the decision that he was good to go and that was news to us.”
