Richmond grapplers prepping to host MRVC East tourney

RICHMOND – The Spartans have a chance to add to their collection of boys wrestling championships Saturday, when they host the Missouri River Valley Conference East Division Tournament. The Spartans – whose list of titles include Class 1A-2A state crowns in 1986 and 1988, and the 2005 Class state title – enter the competition after sweeping a triangular Tuesday. They defeated host school Carrollton 54-27 and edged Chillicothe 46-35. Richmond wrestled only four matches in winning the dual with Carrollton. The Spartans won eight matches by forfeit, as the Trojans were open at the 106-, 113-, 120-, 126-, 132-, 138, 170- and 285-pound divisions. Carrollton won the 145 and 152 matches by forfeit. Richmond went 1-3 in the head-to-head matches. Larry Penniston was the team’s lone head-to-head winner, pinning Xander England in 36 seconds at 220.
