Richmond girls fall in district title game

KANSAS CITY – Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump expects the Spartans’ 51-31 season-ending loss to St. Pius X of Kansas City in the Class 4 District 15 title game to leave the Spartans with a craving. That craving is to win a district title in 2024. “Yes, it hurts to lose in that championship game,” Vantrump said minutes after the March 4 defeat at St. Pius. “But now, they know that we are a contender, and especially for next year, I think it’ll give them that absolute boost to push for it. And I think they’ll have a good chance of getting it.” In getting a taste of playing for a title, the Spartans made their first appearance in a girls district championship game since 2017, when Vantrump was a senior in the program. That season, they fell to Lawson in the Class 3 District 15 Tournament and finished 1314.
