Richmond boys grind out tournament title win over Chillicothe
LAWSON – Richmond varsity boys coach Kevin Jermain’s normally speedy Spartans had to take a grind-andpound approach to down Chillicothe 46-34 Jan. 14 at Lawson High School for the Lawson Invitational Basketball Tournament title.
“Both teams played really well defensively, and we didn’t work ... hard to get our shots (on offense), so it was definitely a grind,” Jermain said. “It was never … (us getting) the easy buckets that we normally get.”
Junior Jack Gogue and senior Keyshaun Elliott agreed they managed a grind-it-out win.
“We had to play a lot of hard defense,” Gogue said. “Some of our offense wasn’t working, so we just had to run through it a lot, just … try (and get) open shots.”
Like Jermain, Elliott saw a parallel between the win and Richmond’s 58-44 win over Gallatin, also in the high school gym, in the winner’s bracket semifinals Jan. 13.
“It was two hard-fought battles – tonight and last night,” Elliott said. “But … we (have) got the guys that can play one-on-one and ……
