Richmond beats Lexington, gets Winter Classic underway

RICHMOND – The Spartans’ 51-43 win Jan. 22 over visiting Lexington in varsity boys basketball was not done in typical Richmond fashion. “We played Lexington’s game. … I think that’s why it was more of a struggle,” Richmond boys coach Kevin Jermain said. “Lexington … (wanted) to make the game in the 40s, low 50s and we never could get the game at our pace.” Sophomore post player Jack Gogue – Richmond’s leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Keyshaun Elliott with 13 – agreed. “They really just, like, slowed everything down, didn’t let us go in transition or anything,” Gogue said. “(We) had to run through all of our sets. We just like to go fast. We didn’t go that fast tonight.” A slower, half-court style “can be our style of play, but that’s not what we want it to be,” junior guard Layne Cavanah said. “We want to push the ball, get open threes, get the ball inside,” he said.
