RHS girls’ season ends with ‘emotional roller coaster’
KNOB NOSTER – Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump went on what she called “an emotional roller coaster” when her Spartans faced Excelsior Springs Monday night in the Class 4 District 14 Tournament at Knob Noster High School.
The ride Vantrump experienced ended like this … With less than 20 seconds left in the final quarter and Excelsior Springs leading 4440, Richmond sophomore Adilyn Swope sank a three-point bucket to make it a onepoint game. Then, with 5.7 seconds left, Lara Hutton sank two foul shots to make it 46-43 Excelsior Springs.
Next, Richmond committed a turnover, followed by an Excelsior Springs turnover. With less than a second remaining, the Spartans attempted a buzzer-beating trey, hoping to tie it and force overtime.
The shot was no good. Richmond lost 46-43.
Coaching a finish like that, “you get excited and you get stressed,” Vantrump admitted.
