Reopening of organized sports shows this is no ‘normal’ year

As May rolls into June, the world of organized sports is no longer near-comatose, as it seemed for much of March and April, when tournaments and seasons were being postponed or cancelled. But it is not alert, beaming and doing handsprings either. It is more like me after awakening from a deep sleep: groggy and grumbly, fumbling and stumbling around, trying to make sense of “reality” and what is “normal,” wondering whether to stay awake or go back to bed. The most bizarre example of this is in Germany, where soccer teams are playing again. FS1 is telecasting games of the 1. Bundesliga, Germany’s top-flight division. On Tuesday, while working in my living room and channel surfing, I caught part of Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V.Dortmund vs. FC Bayern Munich. What I saw and heard made we wonder if I was dreaming about watching television – and if that dream had been inspired by an episode of a 1970s/early ’80s TV show.
