Orrick girls grow in court warming loss
ORRICK – Last week marked a week of growth for Orrick’s varsity girls basketball program, coach Zach McGill and senior guard Anna Parker agreed after the Bearcats’ 57-17 Jan. 21 court warming loss to Tina-Avalon/Norborne, or TAN.
“Our defense got a lot better,” Parker, who was named courtwarming queen, said.
The Bearcats grew more during the week than they had all season, McGill said.
“We’re learning,” he said. “We’re getting better. … There’s good stuff coming.”
The Bearcats improved at “the technical basketball side – just being aggressive towards the bucket, learning … when to drive, not forcing the ball into space when it’s not there,” McGill said. He also saw more patience, he said.
Coming off their first win of the season Jan. 18 and a 30-27 loss Jan. 19 to visiting Penney of Hamilton, the maturing Bearcats kept it close with TAN through the first quarter. Trailing 2-0, they staged a 7-0 run. TAN answered with a 9-2 run to lead 11-9 at quarter’s end.
