Orrick boys’ fourth-quarter comeback falls short
ORRICK – The Bearcats nearly pulled off a comeback victory to cap a night of courtwarming varsity basketball.
Trailing in their Jan. 21 meeting with visiting Tina-Avalon, 47-29, with 5 minutes, 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats chipped their way within five, 54-49, with about a minute left. The Dragons threatened to pull away during that final minute, pushing the margin to nine before Orrick freshman Logan Smith sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer to cap the Bearcats’ 58-52 non-conference defeat.
“I was standing there on the three-point line that entire possession, waiting for (Tucker Greer) to kick it out. And when he kicked it out, I just shot it,” Smith said.
Junior guard Zander Stevinson, for one, felt glad Smith took the shot.
“All year, I’ve been telling him to shoot and he finally did,” Stevinson said. “And he made it.”
