RICHMOND – Area football fans who remember Richmond’s 1971 Class 3A state title run will recognize a familiar opponent as they look over the 2020 schedule. On Sept. 11, the Spartans are slated to host Fulton. They defeated the Hornets 29-25 at Fulton for the 1971 title – the first of the program’s two titles. Fulton’s roster included running back Tony Galbreath, who would go on to play at the University of Missouri, followed by 12 seasons in the NFL. Galbreath started his pro career with New Orleans, where he played for five seasons, followed by three seasons with Minnesota and four with the New York Giants. He carried four times for 17 yards in the Giants’ 39-20 victory over Denver in Super Bowl XXI. The Spartans, who went 7-4 in 2019, are slated to open Aug. 28 by hosting Lathrop, a 2019 Class 2 state semifinalist and the 2018 Class 2 state runner-up; and make a Sept. 4 visit to Oak Grove before hosting the Hornets.
