Mahomes effect makes NFL draft easier to endure

Maybe Patrick Mahomes II has caused me to mellow. I state this as I think about the NFL draft, which kicked off Thursday. There is much to dislike about the annual extravaganza. There is all the pre-event hype, as folks on the NFL Network and elsewhere comment for months about when players will get picked and what teams’ needs are. And as I mentioned in an April 2019 column, the event itself runs waaaaaaay long and the draft picks get hyped to death. The worst part of the draft, though, is how it brings out the worst in me. Three years come to mind as examples of how the draft has inspired me to behave, or at least think, badly: 1991, 1998 and 2014. In 1991, the then-Los Angeles Raiders took quarterback Todd Marinovich as a first-round pick out of USC. In 1998, the then-San Diego Chargers took quarterback Ryan Leaf in the first round and second overall out of Washington State University (Peyton Manning, you will recall, went first overall).
