Maddux expects Spartans to be deep, swat softball

Richmond varsity softball coach Staci Maddux probably won’t lose sleep if circumstances force her to change her lineup this season. “We’re very deep in multiple positions,” Maddux said Aug. 8, the first day of practice allowed by the Missouri State High School Activities Association, at Southview Park. “We have players that can play two to three positions. We have several that can catch – and that’s a good thing going into … (the) tournaments that we’re in.” The Spartans also have two girls who can pitch, Maddux said: senior Aireanna Hoeppner and sophomore Aleana McFee. She expects McFee to be the No. 1 pitcher. “She’s … worked very hard this summer,” Maddux said. “Made a lot of improvement.” Hoeppner’s career plans also might have influenced the decision to make McFee the ace. “Aireanna … is being recruited as a third baseman, so she wants to focus on third base,” Maddux said.
