Girls golf turnout has Dennis feeling ‘awesome’

Richmond golf coach Murray Dennis finds himself in an “awesome” situation as Richmond’s girls season gets underway. As of this week, there were 10 girls out for golf. That’s in contrast to 2022, when the Spartans started with three players and finished with seven. The 10 Spartans include junior Kylie Holland, a latecomer to last season’s team. Encouraged by Zalie Gregory, Holland got hooked on golf in part because of the sense of variety it offers, she said after a morning practice Aug. 11 at Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond. “I like that each day is a different (day) – you play differently,” she said. Holland also found it good for her emotional well-being. “It’s just, like, calm and concentrating,” she said. But golf doesn’t always evoke calmness, Holland acknowledged. When asked about her goals for the season, she listed avoiding frustration as one of them. “I get frustrated a lot whenever I’m playing,” she said. Holland is among three returners.
