Firecrackers win novice comp league title; look to expand
A new area competitive softball program is already looking to expand.
The program, the Ray County Firecrackers, launched this year with a 10-and-under (10U) team. After a summer season that has included winning their division in the Intro to Competitive Softball League in Liberty and playing in USA Softball and USSSA tournaments in Missouri and Kansas, the Firecrackers are looking to add a 12-and-under (12U) team.
“For a first-year comp team, we’ve done well in tournaments, playing against girls that (had) played double the amount of ball already when we (started),” said Norman Clevenger III, an assistant coach.
Tryouts are scheduled for both teams for Aug. 5 at the Norborne R-VIII School District field, where the new Norborne Hardin-Central softball co-op will play its home games. The 10U tryouts are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. and the 12U tryouts are slated for 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
