Final state tourney is bittersweet for champion
Brady Hyder was expecting to be emotionally conflicted this week.
Hyder was slated to help represent Richmond at the Class 2 state boys wrestling tournament. At press time, the two-day competition was set to conclude Thursday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Being a high school senior, Hyder expected the competition to be “heartbreaking,” given it would be his final time to wrestle at state.
“I’m going to miss it, but at the same time, it’s something I’m just so happy for and grateful for,” he said Feb. 21.
Hyder, who qualified for state in 2025 in the 138-pound division, ensured he would compete in Columbia by winning the 126 title at the Class 2 District 4 Tournament, held Feb. 20-21 at Excelsior Springs. In accordance with Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) regulations, the top four placers in each weight class advanced from districts to state.
Hyder finished his district title run with a second-period pin of Excelsior Springs’ Logan Bates.
