Double-digit lead slips from RHS boys in fifth-place game
Late in the third quarter, the Spartans were in position to pull away from Wellington- Napoleon in the boys fifth-place game of the Richmond Winter Classic.
The runaway didn’t happen. Richmond was leading the Jan. 31 varsity basketball clash 44-31 when Wellington-Napoleon started a 22-4 run that extended into the fourth quarter. The Spartans fought to keep it close, but the Tigers held on, sinking four foul shots down the stretch to down Richmond 5752.
“We kind of did it to ourselves,” Richmond varsity coach Brent Behler said minutes after the loss in the Richmond High School gym. “We got a technical, and then, they went on a run.”
In addition, the Spartans struggled offensively the fourth quarter, Behler and sophomore guard Cale Moyer agreed.
“They were just hitting their shots and we weren’t,” Moyer said. “And we weren’t moving very well on defense.”
Richmond made enough shots during the first quarter to trade leads with Wellington-Napoleon and then lead 13-11 at quarter’s end…
