Covering golf tournaments provides worthwhile walking

I disagree with a certain quote about golf that has been attributed to a famous native Missourian. The quote is, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” Years ago, I read that Show-Me Stater Mark Twain (born Samuel Langhorne Clemens) had made that quip. But the Center for Mark Twain Studies website and other sources convincingly argue that the man who put the town of Hannibal on the literary map probably did not say or write that. Regardless of who first said or wrote it, golfing is not wasted exercise. Nor is following a round of golf on foot, as I was reminded Monday while covering Richmond’s Timmy Hamilton and Orrick’s Dylan Comstock during a Kansas City Junior Tour competition at Drumm Farm in Independence (see related story).
