Bearcats start golf season with new coach, new tourney

Maddie Slough opted to take a different approach to opening Orrick’s golf season than she might have if this weren’t her first season leading the Bearcats. On March 20, Slough and three of her Bearcats participated in the Richmond Coaching Tournament at Shirkey Golf Course. Suggested to her during the summer by Richmond coach Murray Dennis, the tournament allowed coaches to provide hands-on instruction. During a March 19 interview at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course, where the Bearcats play their home matches, Slough was expecting the tournament to be in contrast to the type of tournament she would’ve offered if Orrick had hosted a season opener, as the Bearcats have done. “My tournament would’ve been a … stroke-play … tournament,” Slough said. “You’d be playing … in a threesome or foursome with different schools.” Maddox Peterson paced the Bearcats, who had an incomplete team for the general standings, but placed seventh in the best ball competition.
