Varsity football coach Nick Persell got his typical turnout for Richmond’s latest futures camp. Roughly 100 youngsters attended this year’s three-day camp, which concluded recently at Spartan Stadium and included the tradition of the campers running out of the game tunnel onto the field with the current high school Spartans. “It’s usually pretty similar among the three days,” Persell said. “It’s usually just over 100.” As usual, the first day of camp involved drills for positions, according to Persell. The second day featured punting, passing and kicking contests, he said. The third day involved scrimmaging – and, of course, the running-out-of-the-tunnel ceremony. And as usual, the high school Spartans helped coach the youngsters. Those who assisted included Jacob Johnson, who just finished his sophomore year. “It was really fun and exciting. … (It brought) me back (to) when I was a kid and I’d come to these,” Johnson said.
