Nelson Lungren Jr.

It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the sad loss of our brother, Woodward Nelson Lungren Jr. Woodward Nelson Lungren Jr., age 68, of Bosworth passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Nelson was born Feb. 11, 1955, to Woodward and Waneta (Feese) Lungren in Braymer. Nelson lived in Stet and then Bosworth for his entire life. He attended Stet High School before relocating to Bosworth. He graduated from Bosworth R-V High School. In high school, Nelson enjoyed basketball and softball.

After graduation, Nelson worked in a variety of jobs, such as helping farmers during harvest and helping move farm equipment to different locations. He was a truck driver. He set trusses on newly constructed buildings. He joined the Operations Engineering Local 101, where he operated heavy equipment – i.e., cranes, boom trucks, backhoes, bulldozers, road maintainers, etc. He removed numerous loads of scrap metal to clean up both land and waterways.

Nelson is survived by one brother, Edward (Kathy) of Smithville; three sisters, Anna Jones (George) of Green Valley, Ariz., Mary Stone (Ron) of Hollister and Marguerite Ogden (Rick) of Bolivar; a brother-in-law, Norman Miller of Carrollton; an aunt, Vitula Lungren; and an uncle, Troy Feese. Several nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends also survive.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and sister, Lina Miller.

Nelson was one of those special people. Strangers became instant friends, drawn to him for his interest in hearing their life’s stories. Nelson obtained numerous articles from the Carrollton Library regarding his ancestors. He spent hours at the Carrollton Library.

Nelson enjoyed tractor pulls and fishing for catfish, and he was excited when he spotted a buck with a huge rack.

Nelson’s greatest joy was being part of a small-town life. He attended family reunions, fish fries, wild-game dinners, church socials and county fairs. He touched many hearts and earned the admiration of many people.

He will be dearly missed. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Bethany Church of the Brethren or the Mount Olivet Cemetery. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 19, at the Bethany Church of the Brethren in Stet, with visitation beginning at noon and services to follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Jason Frazer will officiate. Burial will follow the services in the Mount Olivet Cemetery near Stet.
