Backup QB leads Spartans to shutout win over Owls
Richmond varsity football coach Nick Persell had coached his son Carson before Sept. 11, but there was something different this time: The younger Persell was making his first-ever varsity quarterbacking start.
Senior Jacob Lieberknecht, Richmond’s regular starting quarterback, was in concussion protocol because of an injury suffered during the Spartans’ Week 2 home loss to Mary Institute and Country Day School (MICDS). As Lieberknecht’s backup, Carson Persell was called on to run the offense for the team’s road meeting with Marshall.
The younger Persell, a high school sophomore, responded with three rushing touchdowns and one TD pass to help the Spartans cruise to a 38-0 win. His stat line in the livestreamed 11man gridiron clash also included three two-point conversion passes – one to Malikiah Tharp, another to Brice Dome and the third to Bryson Pruitt.
