Years after carrying speakers, guitars and equipment backstage for his grandfather’s shows, a magician is returning to the Farris Theatre with a production of his own.

Travis Porter, creator and host of Magic On Edge, will bring the family-friendly magic and variety production to the Farris Theatre, 301 West Main Street, in Richmond at 7 p.m. Sept. 19. Porter, who performs as The Travisty, said the appearance carries special meaning because his grandfather, Byron Jones, once owned the theater and produced shows there.

Porter described Jones as the “Kansas City King of Country Music” who ran one of the area’s longest- running country music shows from 1963 to 2016 and gave performers opportunities to take the stage.

Jones first performed at the Farris Theatre from 1963 to 1973, according to Porter. He returned around 1983, purchased the theater and owned it until the 1990s, eventually selling the Farris to operate a theater in Kansas City.
