Roofing project targets ongoing leaks at Richmond schools

Persistent roof leaks at Richmond’s middle and high school buildings have prompted plans for repairs to some of the most problematic areas.

The Board of Education recently approved a $153,288 bid from Advanced Roofing Technologies for roofing work at both buildings. The bid includes $83,996 for the middle school project and $69,292 for the high school.

Director of Operations John Daniels explained the district experiences leaks nearly every time it rains, with some areas particularly problematic.

At the middle school, Daniels noted leaks extend from the kitchen area and are especially prevalent around the weight room. At the high school, he said the kitchen has only a few leaks, but another section has experienced more significant problems.

“We literally have water going down the inside walls of classrooms,” stated Daniels. “The paint falls off the walls.”
