Tied write-in votes force Richmond special elections
Richmond city leaders approved special elections for two council seats after an unusual series of tied write-in votes during the April municipal election left both Ward I and Ward IV without clear winners.
The special elections, approved during a recent Richmond City Council meeting, will coincide with the Aug. 4 primary election and determine the Ward I oneyear term and Ward IV two-year term seats.
City Attorney Chris Williams explained the unusual situation developed after seven Ward I write-in candidates each received one vote during the April 7 municipal election, while two Ward IV write-in candidates also tied with one vote each. Current council members Bob Bond and Ron Peterson will continue serving until replacements are elected or appointed.
Williams explained city officials reviewed Missouri election law and candidate eligibility requirements after certifying the April election results and discovering the write-in races.
