Report labels sheriff, prosecuting attorney’s offices as “poor”

A recent audit report issues a “poor” rating and identifies missing money, questionable purchases and weaknesses with controls and procedures in both the Ray County Sheriff’s and Prosecuting Attorney’s offices. An audit released Oct. 2 by Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick gave Ray County a rating of “poor,” identifying nearly $3,000 in missing money, as well as more than $5,500 in questionable purchases made by the Ray County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) including beer, cigarettes and 76 hams while former Ray County Sheriff Gary Bush was in office, according to Fitzpatrick. Bush served from 2018 through 2020. The report, which was a regularly scheduled county audit, calls for improvements to controls and procedures in both the RCSO and the Ray County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. “The audit was able to identify several key areas that need improvement in order to ensure the county government is more accountable to the taxpayers of Ray County.
