Jail power outage leads to assault; generator rented
RICHMOND – One of the frequent power outages at the Ray County Jail, usually backed up by a generator, remained out last week and “cover of darkness” allowed for an assault, Sheriff Scott Childers told county commissioners.
“Our generator went out,” Childers said. “We lost power and then the generator wouldn’t click on.”
A company arrived to make repairs, but found the old generator dated to the 1970s. Finding parts to make repairs could take up to a month, Childers said.
As a result, Childers had to rent a generator for $900 per week – which might have ended the story but did not.
“When they hooked that up, the (county’s) switch was bad,” Childers said.
The bad switch had to be replaced, he said.
“That was $5,000 just for the switch,” Childers said.
The power has returned, but the backup needs to stay at the jail until the county’s generator is repaired, he said. If power did not go out regularly at the jail, then the backup would be less of a necessity, but the jail cannot go…
