Fire chief warns of rising temperatures

With summer fun in full swing, Richmond Fire Chief Mark Sowder talks heat safety as July is the hottest month of the year. “Taking precautions with regard to summer heat is something that gets overlooked by lots of people,” said the chief. “The heat shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially for the young, elderly and those with other health conditions that may be compounded by excessive heat.” He noted that as summer temperatures continue to rise yearly, education about the risks and dangers of heat-related illnesses becomes increasingly important. Whether basking in the sun on a tropical beach or simply going about the daily routine, heat-related illnesses can strike anyone at any time. “We want people to be as safe as possible in the heat to avoid heat-related illnesses that are sometimes fatal but also may have a lasting negative health effect after the initial event is over,” he said.
