Fire chief talks winter safety

Winter officially starts Dec. 21. In preparation for the colder times, Richmond Fire Chief Mark Sowder talks about winter weather safety precautions. “The number-one safety precaution for winter driving is not to drive in snow or ice unless it is absolutely necessary,” said Sowder. “If you cannot avoid driving in winter weather, then drive slowly. Adjust departure times to allow for a slower trip than normal, and do not rush.” He said “winterizing” your vehicle is a necessity. “Your vehicle should be inspected before winter weather driving. Wipers and tires need to be checked during winter months,” the fire chief explained. “Tire pressure reduces during cold weather, and sometimes air needs to be added.” Wipers need to be in good shape for visibility in winter weather, he said.
