Fire chief talks firework safety

With the goal being the safety of area residents, Richmond Fire Chief Mark Sowder discussed fireworks safety as the Fourth of July is nearing. As locals prepare for barbeques and fireworks shows – the chief reminds residents of the dangers of fireworks. “Firework safety is a difficult topic for the fire department because consumer fireworks are inherently dangerous,” said the chief. “The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a public display executed by licensed professionals. Even consumer-grade fireworks can cause serious injury, including burns, eye and tissue injuries to the extremities.” He explained the majority of firework-related injuries occur even when adult supervision is present – this alone won’t prevent injuries. Firecrackers, sparklers and bottle rockets cause the majority of fireworks injuries, with burns being the most common, he added.
